Ayrshire’s Last Days of Colliery Steam

23 Jun

I picked up a copy of “Ayrshire’s Last Days of Colliery Steam” by Tom Heavyside from Bill Hudson Transport Books at Wigan.

The book follows the normal format for this series with good quality, black and white photos and informative captions along with the odd map & sketch. The book contains a few previously seen (or at least very similar) photos along with many new ones. A wonderful image of a bygone era is created by the book, the dilapidation, grime and hard work involved in coal mining is well depicted and will prove very useful in the detailing and weathering of Kirkmellington.

All in all a very useful book.

Mmm, that reminds me – I was promised a copy of this book as a birthday present but it never appeared. I may have to spend my own money!

I think I’m only risking duplicates of shots in the similarly titled “Scotland’s Last Days…” from the same publisher & author. Shouldn’t be too bad.
