Gremlins III – Play time in the garage

26 Dec

Merry Christmas everyone.

Permission was received from the boss to set up Kirkmellington in the garage today, being Boxing Day. With the help of my Dad as 50% shareholder in the layout, we set up the 4 boards before lunch. Playtime was intended to follow the leftovers buffet but the Gremlins were hard at work in the garage. Several sidings and the fiddle yard 3-Way point were all non functional. Lunch was spent deep in thought at the problem.

Several hours work this afternoon saw my Dad perched uncomfortably under the layout, mega meter in hand tracing the wires & feeds. After proving the wiring & jumpers were all fully functional, we tested the track droppers and hey presto, movement. In all we have found and treated around 8 dry joints. All sidings and points now work as intended. A couple of displaced rail joints need tweaking and some point blades cleaning of ballast but generally, the layout had behaved. We ran a typical sequence through from BR arrival, exchange of wagons from the colliery to BR departure.

A new handheld controller delivered to my Dad by Santa has been tested and proven so is ready for Eskmuirs next outing to Kendal at he end of January 2014. The controller is made by All Components.

Overall, a step back and look at progress was quite satisfactory for me. There is much to do in a very short time but we aim to have reached a decent point by the time of its first show in a couple of months.
