Modelling Saturday

9 Aug

Risborough and District MRC hold a Saturday modelling session every month. Combined with the regular Friday night meeting, this give an opportunity to work on bigger projects & achieve lots more on the layouts.

This month, I was lucky to be allowed to take Kirkmellington along to carry out some more involved work ready for our appearance at Expo EM North in September.

We have now installed the remaining colliery buildings and head stocks, miners cottages and completed installation of the main back scenes using our panoramic stitched pictures. We have also set up the extension board ready for the final car park, cobbles and winding house to be fixed down, well so long as I buy some cobbles anyway.

In case I miss Expo North, the cottages look good indeed – scratchbuilds?
I was reading about Ayrshire miners’ rows in the pre-war period the other week – very sobering reading about the appalling conditions in which the miners and their families lived. The spread of “council houses” from the 1930s on must have been utterly transformative. Whilst off topic, this is the kind of social history I find fascinating, and usually explored via railway modelling research. 🙂

I have some great photos of Ayr and Troon which are the inspiration for these, very small and no doubt a harsh life but mostly now demolished. we had the same in the North west with swathes of low quality ‘back to back’ terraces that grew up around the cotton mills being swept away post war. The models are actually Hornby Scaledale Fishermans Cottages with modified roof slates, rendered or repainted. There is also a managers row on the layout, larger with gardens. photos coming soon.
