Hudson Tipper – chassis 1

30 Nov

Having 6 kits to build, my chosen approach is to build one to see what mistakes I make and batch build the other 5. With the hopper bodies all now complete, I have started the first chassis. Two sessions of 2 hours has resulted in a rolling chassis with another session to follow for the brake gear assembly.

The chassis is a straightforward fold up with the exception of the bars across the bottom between the w irons. These were tricky to do with a 90 degree bend followed by a reverse 180 degree bend of the <1mm brass strips. I feared chassis distortion as it's very weak and easy to deform but becomes rigid and strong as the build progresses. The head stocks are also easy enough to form and slot into place though a little straightening has been needed afterwards.

The final piece of the puzzle was adding bearings and wheels, loose at first for a rolling test on a piece of track before fixing in place. Amazingly (for my first 4mm brass chassis kit), the chassis works!!!!
