Hudson Tipper – Chassis 3, headstocks and sole bars

22 Jan

Work continues on the production batch of Hudson Tippers. Progress has now reached the headstocks and sole bars.

The headstocks are a 3 piece etch. First is an inverted U channel that simply slots onto the under frame. A base plate is then attached to the underside which creates the lip to the buffer beam. The top of the headstock is then formed with an L shaped plate, again forming a lip to the buffer beam. This is all straightforward.

More tricky are the various gusset plates, pivot mounts and brackets the need to be added to the top plate. Forming these is easy enough and the kit has been made with tabs and slots so its easy to position. The tricky bit is holding them whilst you apply solder. A combination of the hold and fold to clamp the chassis unit place and stop it moving, tweezers / thin nose pliers and singed fingers has seen me through!

With the headstocks complete, it’s time for the sole bar overlay. First more rivets to push through with my London Road Models gravity rivet tool, the the top & bottom folds to make before adding to the base underframe. There is a lever/ bracket to add which again needs the aid if the Hold & Fold to steady the chassis unit (and steady hands too for that matter).

Next its the suspension springs and bearings and hopefully we then have 5 rolling chassis to compliment the first.
