Hudson Tipper, chassis 4 – success

21 Mar

With the under frames built, the final operations are to fit the cosmetic suspension springs, bore out for and fit the brass bearings and then test fit the wheels. I used a steel bar pushed through the full chassis to ensure the suspension etch aligned with the bearing holes. Providing I have kept the chassis square as I’ve folded, soldered and added to it, this should give me a good chance of a free rolling chassis (fingers crossed anyway).

A modification I have made has been to grind flush the bottom linking bar behind the wheels. I have found the wheel rims / tyres have been shorting out to the chassis under certain conditions so I am fitting 0.5mm thick plastic washers to keep them away from the frame.

With the Gibson EM wheels dismantled, axles pushed into the bearings and wheels pushed back into place, I now have a full rake of rolling chassis which sit square on the rails. How they perform under shunt conditions is yet to be tested but as ever, I am hopeful of success. I have added the coupling hooks and backing plate supplied. Coupling links will. Be added after painting.

Next, I need to build and fit the brake gear and buffers and we’re ready for painting.
