Painting and Weathering on Subcontract

9 Jan

The next EM gauge layout being built by the Senior Citizen of RMRG, Harkness will debut at their show on 9th and 10th April this year. As happened on Kirkmellington, I have been tasked with painting and weathering the buildings once constructed by Mr B senior.

There have been several articles in the modelling mags lately on the use of Chipping fluids to create weathering patches so I have experimented using both MIG and AK interactive solutions. Acrylic paints, generally Humbrol and Lifecolour are used.

A base coat of rusty / undercoat shades were applied first before the chipping fluid. Once dry, the top coat colour was applied. When this was just air dry, a wet brush was applied which loosens the top coat and allows the base colours to break through. This gives very subtle tone and colour differences and certainly provided an extra dimension to the buildings.

More conventional weathering with acrylics, powders and stains were then used to complete the buildings before everything was sealed in Testors Dullcoat Matt varnish.
