Making best use of spare time

13 Feb

This week has presented me with some rare spare time, a night away for work and a night alone at home. With a few shows coming up and emboldened by the outing to Southampton, I have used the time doing modelling.
The night in a hotel was taken up adding better speakers to the DCC108, painting some signal wire posts and weathering some more bulky rusty gear wheels for the colliery yard.

My night alone saw me tackle a totally different project – ambient sounds. Whilst running the layout with DCC sound locos at Southampton, a remark was received that the sounds of the colliery were notably absent and would add to the overall effect. Now as we know, deep Mining, especially in small mines is now a part of UK history so no live recording would be possible. A search of the web did not offer anything ‘off the shelf’ but many free sound clip sites were found. Further research threw up audacity, a free download sound editing software platform. I found around a dozen suitable sound clips, from compressors and conveyor belts to stones falling. I have mixed and sampled these to create a 10minute long multilayer ambient sound track.  Hopefully this will add an ambient backing track to the layout, it will be kept at a low level so as not to drown out the locos, public or other exhibits. The completed track was exported as a WAV file which can be played as it is or imported into iTunes.
All in all a productive week and useful ready for RISEX next weekend.
