My model railway history

Over the years, I have built and exhibited several 00 gauge model railway layouts. All have required the assistance of my Dad and the Rochdale Model Railway Group.

As a young teenager, I had ‘Teignham’ a small circular layout based in the West Country. Teignham attended one show at Rochdale. ‘Teignham’ featured code 100 rail and out of the box RTR stock Representing the late 1980’s.

In my late teens, (1990 to 1996), I had ‘Argyle Road’ a round and round layout based in the Glasgow area.  ‘Argyle Road’ again featured code 100 track and points but rolling stock had progressed. A passion for Parkside wagon kits shone through and a fascination with converting and detailing RTR locos and DMU’s developed. A club nickname of Black and Decker Boy resulted from an eagerness to wield a saw on a new loco. ‘Argyle Road’ saw more success attending many exhibitions including East Midlands (Nottingham), Wallasey, Newcastle-u-Tyne as well as our home show in Rochdale. ‘Argyle Road’ featured in Railway Modeller magazine.

Finally there was ‘Weston Road,’ (2002 to 2006), an end to end layout based on a loco servicing point and small container terminal in the Crewe area. ‘Weston Road’ featured code 75 track and points, some hand built plain track and detailed / customised locos and rolling stock and hand built overhead catenary. Some will remember (fondly)  the auto shuttle which kept a sprinter shuttling back and forth at 2 minute intervals. ‘Weston Road’  built on the success of ‘Argyle Road’ attending many exhibitions including Manchester, East Midlands (Nottingham), East Neuk (St Andrews), DEMU Showcase Burton, Liverpool, Stockport, Warrington, Halifax and once again, Rochdale.  ‘Weston Road’ featured in Rail Express magazine RE94 (Rail Express Modeller Magazine no1) in March 2004.
